It's important for people to learn about maps. The "why" boils down to two words: spatial awareness. Maps help people develop a sense of spatial awareness, a skill that is vital for finding your way in places where streets have no names. It improves your ability to visualize information, make connections, and think critically. But what good is a map without a compass? These two pieces of analog technology may seem outdated, but knowing how to orient yourself using a compass and map can be a lifesaving skill when navigating unfamiliar terrain. It gives a person a fighting chance to find their way out of a potentially dangerous situation.

Rick Egan Davis has been training people to use maps and compasses in wild spaces for over a generation. He has provided training to individuals and outdoor organizations to prepare them to navigate wilderness areas without the assistance of satellites, cell towers, and battery-operated devices.

Seward Park Audubon Center is hosting Rick’s Map & Compass Workshop on Saturday, December 13 from 1pm-2:30pm PST. Whether you view it as a necessity, an interesting skill set, or an emergency preparedness must-have, you can gain knowledge and skills from Rick's years of experience. All teaching materials and other supplies are provided for this workshop.

Registration will open Thursday, December 11 at 2pm PST.
