This distinctive cone features small seeds that resemble the back side of a mouse, leading to fables about the rodent’s relationship with the mighty tree. Despite the name, the Douglas Fir is not a member of the genus abies. This conifer is a member of pseudotsuga which means "false hemlock." The Doug-firs, as they are called, can be found in coastal regions from California to British Columbia.
